Take CAT if you want the IIMs and the widest choice of colleges. Add XAT for XLRI and its peer schools. Pick NMAT for NMIMS Mumbai, ranked 73rd globally by the Financial Times, or SNAP for Symbiosis. CAT and XAT reward depth; NMAT and SNAP reward speed. Most aspirants should write CAT + XAT + one of NMAT or SNAP. One rule to remember: NMIMS counts only your first NMAT attempt, while SNAP counts your best of three.

You have been preparing for CAT for months. Now your WhatsApp group is also talking about XAT, NMAT and SNAP, and everyone has a different opinion. This CareerGrowKaro guide compares CAT vs XAT vs NMAT vs SNAP on what actually decides your result: the colleges each exam opens, how fast you must think, how wrong answers and retakes are treated, and how much you will spend. By the end, you will know which mix of exams fits you — and exactly what to do this week.
CAT vs XAT vs NMAT vs SNAP: What Is the Real Difference?
All four exams test the same three skills: maths, reasoning and English. What changes is who runs them, how much time you get, and how mistakes are punished.
| Exam | Run by | Exam date | Questions / time | Wrong answer |
| CAT | IIMs | Nov 29, 2026 | 68 Qs / 120 min* | −1 (MCQs only) |
| XAT | XLRI Jamshedpur | Jan 3, 2027 | ~95 Qs / 180 min | −0.25, plus a skip penalty |
| NMAT | GMAC | Your slot, Nov 2–Dec 20, 2026 | 108 Qs / 120 min | No minus, but blanks hurt |
| SNAP | Symbiosis International (Deemed University) | Dec 13, 19 and 26, 2026 | 60 Qs / 60 min | −0.25 |
*68 questions was the CAT 2025 pattern. The IIMs can change the count, so check the official tutorial on iimcat.ac.in in November.
The biggest difference is not difficulty. It is reach. CAT opens doors at the IIMs and many other top schools. NMAT and SNAP are mainly gateways to one university group each — NMIMS and Symbiosis. XAT sits in between.
Your next step: Write down the five colleges you most want to join. That list decides your exam list — not the other way round.
What Changed for the 2026–27 Admission Cycle?
If you read an older comparison, you may miss these updates:
- CAT registrations fell again. About 2.84 lakh students registered for CAT 2026, down from 2.95 lakh in 2025 and 3.29 lakh in 2024. [SOURCE: Collegedunia CAT 2026 Registration Report]
- SNAP added a fourth section. Ethics, Morality and Values now has 10 questions. General English dropped from 15 to 10 questions and Reasoning from 25 to 20. The paper is still 60 questions in 60 minutes.
- NMAT got more time to register. GMAC extended the deadline from October 10 to October 25.
- XAT fees went up. Reports put the XAT 2027 fee at ₹2,300.
Does a smaller CAT crowd mean an easier IIM call? Not necessarily. Registration is not the same as serious preparation. IIM cutoffs depend on how the top scorers perform, not on the total headcount. Treat the drop as news, not as a reason to relax.
Your next step: If you are writing SNAP, take at least one full mock with the new Ethics section before December 13.
Which MBA Entrance Exam Is the Toughest?
Most articles rank these exams from “easy” to “tough”. That hides the real question: what kind of tough? CareerGrowKaro divided each exam’s time by its number of questions. The result shows two very different types of test.

| Exam | Time per question | What it rewards |
| CAT | ~106 seconds | Deep thinking and smart question selection |
| XAT (Part 1) | ~136 seconds | Judgement, careful reading, Decision Making |
| NMAT | ~67 seconds overall; ~47 seconds in Language Skills | Speed with steady accuracy |
| SNAP | 60 seconds | Pure speed and quick elimination |
CareerGrowKaro calculation from official patterns. XAT Part 1 = about 75 questions in 170 minutes; its question count varies slightly by year.
CAT and XAT are depth exams. The questions are harder, but you get more time to think. NMAT and SNAP are speed exams. The questions are simpler, but there is almost no time to get stuck. NMAT’s Language Skills section is the sharpest example: 36 questions in 28 minutes. See the full NMAT 2026 exam pattern and section timings.
Say you are a BCom final-year student in Nagpur. You crack a tricky reasoning set in 8 minutes, but each vocabulary question takes you two minutes. CAT will suit you better than NMAT’s English section, where you get under 50 seconds a question.
Yeh galti mat karna: do not assume an “easy” exam means an easy score. In a speed test, everyone finds the questions easy. Small time losses decide your percentile.
Your next step: This week, take one timed sectional test in each format. The one where you run out of time first is your weakest format — plan extra practice there.
How Do the Marking Rules Change Your Exam-Day Strategy?
The same guess can earn marks in one exam and cost you in another. Here is how each exam treats mistakes:
- CAT: +3 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong multiple-choice answer, and no minus for a wrong type-in-the-answer (TITA) question. Always attempt TITA questions when you have a reasonable answer.
- XAT: −0.25 for each wrong answer. You may skip 8 questions freely; after that, every skip costs 0.10. The General Knowledge section has no negative marking and is not part of your percentile, but XLRI uses it later in selection.
- NMAT: No minus for wrong answers, but unanswered questions hurt your score. Never leave a question blank. You can also choose the order of the three sections.
- SNAP: +1 for correct and −0.25 for wrong. There is no sectional time limit, so you can move freely between sections.
Your next step: Write a “skip rule” for each exam on a card — for example, “XAT: skip 8 at most; NMAT: skip none” — and follow it in every mock until it becomes a habit.
Do Multiple Attempts Actually Help You?
This is where most comparisons go wrong. They call NMAT and SNAP “flexible” because you get three attempts. That is only half true.
| Exam | Attempts allowed | Which score counts |
| CAT | 1 | That one score |
| XAT | 1 | That one score |
| NMAT | Up to 3, with a gap between attempts | NMIMS: first attempt only. Other schools: check each school’s rule |
| SNAP | Up to 3 | Your best score |
NMIMS’s official admissions page says it accepts only the score of your first NMAT attempt, and it does not accept home-proctored scores. So if NMIMS is on your list, your first NMAT attempt is your real exam. Do not use it as a practice test.
SNAP works the other way. Symbiosis counts your best score, as SNAP’s official website confirms. A second attempt is a genuine safety net — if your budget allows it.
For dates, sections and scoring in one place, read our complete NMAT 2026 guide.
Your next step: If NMIMS is a target, book your first NMAT slot on a date when you will be at your best — not simply the earliest date available.
Which Colleges Does Each Exam Open — and Is a Good Score Enough?
Your college list should decide your exams. Here is what each one unlocks:
- CAT: the IIMs, plus top non-IIM schools such as FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon and SPJIMR. Each non-IIM school runs its own application.
- XAT: XLRI Jamshedpur, plus schools such as XIM Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad and Goa Institute of Management.
- NMAT: NMIMS campuses (Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Navi Mumbai, Indore) and other schools such as K J Somaiya and TAPMI. See the full list of colleges that accept NMAT scores.
- SNAP: Symbiosis only — around 30 MBA programmes across 17 institutes, including SIBM Pune and SCMHRD.
A good score only gets you shortlisted. Most schools then hold a written test (WAT), a group discussion or a personal interview (PI). Many also give marks for academics and work experience. For example, NMIMS reportedly used a common cutoff of 209 with sectional cutoffs of 62 last year — but clearing it only earns an interview call.

How do these schools rank globally? The Financial Times Masters in Management Ranking is one of the most respected global business school rankings. It is built mainly on alumni outcomes — salary three years after graduation, career progress and international mobility — so it shows what graduates actually achieve. In 2026, 14 Indian schools made the global top 100. Here is where each exam can take you:
| Exam route | FT-ranked Indian schools (global rank, 2026) |
| CAT | IIM Bangalore (21), SPJIMR (26), IIM Ahmedabad (27), IIM Calcutta (39), IIM Kozhikode (54), IIM Indore (62), MDI Gurgaon (67), IIM Lucknow (72), IIM Udaipur (83), IMI Delhi (90) |
| XAT | XLRI Jamshedpur (33), IMT Ghaziabad (86) |
| NMAT | NMIMS Mumbai (73), TAPMI (98) |
| SNAP | No Symbiosis institute in the 2026 top 100 |
*Many schools accept more than one exam — IMT and TAPMI, for example, also take CAT. The FT ranks only accredited schools that choose to take part, so a missing school is not automatically weaker. Source: FT Masters in Management Ranking 2026
The pattern is clear. CAT opens the most globally ranked schools. Beyond CAT and XAT, NMAT is the only exam here that leads to an FT top-75 school: NMIMS Mumbai.
When you compare placements, look at alumni outcomes and the median salary, not the average. A few very high offers can push an average up. For schools outside the FT list, India’s NIRF publishes the median salaries colleges report. NIRF’s overall rank also weighs research and perception, so for ROI use its salary numbers rather than the rank alone.
Your next step: For each college on your list, note three things: the exam it accepts, last year’s cutoff, and its FT rank or NIRF median salary.
Why Is NMIMS Mumbai Worth a Serious Look?
If you are writing NMAT, NMIMS Mumbai’s School of Business Management (SBM) is the main prize — and its global standing has risen fast.
- 73rd in the world, 4th among India’s non-IIM schools. In the FT Masters in Management Ranking 2026, NMIMS Mumbai ranks 73rd globally and 10th among the 14 Indian schools listed. Among non-IIM schools, only SPJIMR, XLRI and MDI Gurgaon rank higher.
- A 21-place jump. NMIMS SBM moved up from 94th in the 2024 FT ranking to 73rd in 2026.
- Strong career outcomes. According to FT 2026 figures published by NMIMS, the school ranks 29th globally for career progress, with a 47.7% alumni salary increase and 100% employment within three months.
- A route that does not depend on one day. NMAT has no negative marking for wrong answers, lets you pick your test date, and lets you choose the order of sections. A tough CAT day on November 29 does not end your season if NMAT is in your plan.
- One catch to plan for: NMIMS counts only your first NMAT attempt and needs a separate ₹3,000 application. Treat attempt one as the real exam.
A fair word: the top IIMs, SPJIMR and XLRI still rank higher on the FT list. If your CAT or XAT score gets you into those, weigh them first. For most aspirants, though, NMIMS Mumbai is the strongest school reachable without CAT — and a smart second route alongside it.
Your next step: If NMIMS Mumbai is on your list, complete NMAT registration and the NMIMS form before the deadline, then plan your first attempt as your best attempt.
How Much Will It Cost to Write All Four Exams?

Exam fees are only part of the bill. Most flagship programmes charge a separate application fee too.
| Exam | Exam fee (General) | Extra to apply to its flagship school | Total |
| CAT | ₹2,700 (₹1,350 SC/ST/PwBD) | IIMs covered in CAT fee | ₹2,700 |
| XAT | ₹2,300 | +₹200 per XLRI programme | ₹2,500 |
| NMAT | ₹3,000 + 18% GST = ₹3,540 | +₹3,000 NMIMS application | ₹6,540 |
| SNAP | ₹2,550 per attempt | +₹1,000 per Symbiosis programme | ₹3,550 |
| All four | ₹15,190 |
That ₹15,190 covers one attempt each and one flagship programme per exam. Add a second SNAP attempt, an NMAT retake, or forms for schools like FMS and MDI, and the bill can cross ₹20,000. If you live in a smaller town, also budget for travel to your test city.
| For Parents: Is It Worth Paying for All Four? Not always. Paying for an exam your child is not preparing for, or for colleges they will not join, wastes money. A focused plan of two or three exams, chosen from the college list, usually works better than a scattered one. Sit with your child, look at the college list first, and then decide on the fees. |
Your next step: Before paying any fee, check that the exam unlocks at least two colleges you would genuinely join.
Which Exam Suits Your Profile?
There is no single best exam. There is a best mix for you. Find the profile closest to yours:
1. You read fast and enjoy puzzles
Write CAT + XAT. Your strength is depth, and both exams reward it. Start XAT Decision Making practice now — it has no fixed formula and needs regular sets.
2. You are strong in maths but read slowly
CAT gives every section the same 40 minutes, so slow reading hurts in VARC. NMAT gives Quantitative Skills the most time (52 minutes), and SNAP’s English section is now only 10 questions. Add NMAT or SNAP to CAT to play to your strength.
3. One big exam day makes you nervous
NMAT lets you choose your test date and has no negative marking, so you can book a day when you are fresh. For NMIMS, only the first attempt counts — book it when you are ready. SNAP adds a safety net, because your best of three attempts counts.
4. You work full-time and get 1–2 hours a dayx`
Do not spread yourself thin. Write CAT + one of NMAT or SNAP, based on your college list. Spend most hours on CAT; it builds the base for the others.
5. You studied in a Hindi-medium school and worry about English
Watch out for NMAT Language Skills — about 47 seconds a question. CAT’s VARC is reading-heavy too. Read one editorial a day for 30 minutes, and time yourself. Reading speed improves with daily practice, not last-minute cramming.
Should you skip CAT and only prepare for SNAP?
Only if every college on your list is a Symbiosis institute. With about 40 days to go, CAT is already paid for, and your CAT preparation covers most of SNAP’s maths and reasoning. The smarter move: keep CAT as the main focus, then switch to SNAP-style speed drills after November 29.
What Should Your Next 75 Days Look Like?

- By October 25: Register for NMAT and book your slot. If NMIMS is a target, also fill the separate NMIMS form. Follow our step-by-step NMAT 2026 registration guide.
- Also this month: Register for SNAP (closes November 25) and XAT (closes December 6). Finish every form before CAT so nothing distracts you later.
- Until November 28: Keep CAT as your main focus. Take two to three full mocks a week and analyse each one.
- November 29: Write CAT.
- November 30 to December 12: Switch to speed. Do daily 30-minute NMAT and SNAP sectional drills, plus Ethics section practice.
- Your NMAT slot (November 2 to December 20): Take it on the date you booked. If NMIMS counts, be fully ready.
- December 13, 19 and 26: Write your SNAP attempts. Your best score counts.
- December 27 to January 2: Practise XAT Decision Making daily and revise General Knowledge.
- January 3, 2027: Write XAT.
Always confirm dates on the official websites before you pay: CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NMAT easier than CAT?
NMAT questions are usually simpler than CAT’s, and wrong answers carry no penalty. But NMAT is a speed test: you get about 67 seconds a question, against about 106 seconds in CAT. Students who read and calculate fast often find NMAT easier. Students who think deeply but slowly may not.
Is NMIMS Mumbai a good B-school?
By global standards, yes. NMIMS Mumbai’s School of Business Management ranks 73rd in the world in the FT Masters in Management Ranking 2026, and 4th among India’s non-IIM schools after SPJIMR, XLRI and MDI Gurgaon. Admission is through NMAT, and NMIMS counts only your first attempt.
Does NMIMS accept the best of three NMAT scores?
No. NMIMS says it accepts only the score from your first NMAT attempt. You can still take up to three attempts, and other colleges may use a later score. For NMIMS, though, prepare fully before your first slot, and check the current rule on the official NMIMS admissions site.
Can I skip CAT and only prepare for SNAP?
Only if every college on your list is a Symbiosis institute. SNAP leads to around 30 programmes across 17 Symbiosis institutes, while CAT opens the IIMs and many other top schools. If you have already registered for CAT, write it — your CAT preparation also covers most of SNAP’s maths and reasoning.
Is XAT tougher than CAT?
They are tough in different ways. XAT gives more time per question but tests judgement through its Decision Making section and penalises too many skipped questions. CAT has strict 40-minute sections and harder reasoning sets. Decision Making has no fixed formula, so give it separate, regular practice.
Which MBA exams can I still register for in October 2026?
As of October 19, 2026, you can still register for NMAT until October 25, SNAP until November 25, and XAT until December 6. CAT 2026 registration has closed. Deadlines are sometimes extended, so check the official websites before you pay any fee.
Is the SNAP score accepted outside Symbiosis?
SNAP is the entrance test for MBA programmes of Symbiosis International (Deemed University). Its main use is admission to Symbiosis institutes such as SIBM Pune and SCMHRD. If your college list has no Symbiosis institute, SNAP should not be a priority.
The Bottom Line
CAT gives you the widest reach. XAT rewards judgement. NMAT and SNAP reward speed. NMAT also opens NMIMS Mumbai, now ranked 73rd globally by the Financial Times — but NMIMS counts only your first NMAT, while SNAP counts your best. You do not need all four exams. You need the right two or three, chosen from your college list and your strengths.
